  • Water Wars SCV: Newhall County Water District, the SCV's oldest water utility, filed a lawsuit yesterday against Castaic Lake Water Agency, the agency charged with distributing water to the SCV that comes from the State Water Project. The lawsuit stems from a rate increase CLWA adopted earlier this year, increases that NCWD's President (and potential City Council Candidate) Maria Gutzeit say could cost area residents and businesses $850,000 per year. NCWD also says it gets most of its water from ground water supplies, not the State Water Project. CLWA says its rate increase is fair and equitable. Of course all this follows the controversial takeover by way of eminent domain of Valencia Water Company last fall. SIGNAL, KHTS
  • Dumb Tweenaged Males in the SCV Part 1: A 20 year old man was arrested after towing his 19 year old friend on a skateboard behind his car. The skateboarder lost control, hit a curb and injured himself. Not surprisingly both men were drinking. SIGNAL
  • Dumb Tweenaged Males in the SCV Part 2: Thomas Vensko and Colt Doherty, both 20 year olds, will be back in court next month on charges of second degree murder. Recall Doherty and his friend Dakota Demott were allegedly racing Vensko down rural Sand Canyon when they crashed into a tree , killing Demott. KHTS
  • Dumb Tweenaged males in the SCV Part 3: 25 year old Bakersfield man pleas no contest to vehicular manslaughter following a February collision on I-5 in which his passenger, a 24 year old woman, was killed. The man was intoxicated and had high capacity ammunition and a handgun with him as well, but is only being tried on the manslaughter charge SIGNAL
  • Dumb....ok you get the idea: 25 year old man arrested for operating a boat while intoxicated at Pyramid Lake. Actually the boat was adrift. And he was laying on a surfboard behind it. SIGNAL
  • So that's what all that helicopter activity was about yesterday evening:  Three people, one injured, were airlifted out of the Rowher Flats off-road area west of Sierra Highway yesterday SIGNAL
  • Deputies remember Deputy David March, the Deputy who lived in Santa Clarita and was killed by an illegal immigrant 11 years ago on April 29. Ultimately his killer was brought to justice. SCVNEWS
  • The SCV Unity Coalition Facebook page coordinating the protest against Joe Messina's Mayors Prayer Breakfast has 67 likes so far, and at least 15 who say they will are committed to protesting Brad Dacus' appearance Thursday morning. A couple hundred more are on the invite list. All this in the same week when a professional basketball player came out of the closet for the first time. Check it out on FB
  • Inside the mind of Joe Messina: Messina, you'll recall, is the founder/leader of the Dunamis Group, a Christian business organization for men, as well as a radio host on KHTS and  Hart Board member. Today on his blog, he posts an alarming & rambling rant about the state of education in America today, saying we need to get back to the fundamentals and stop teaching children how to use condoms or about bestiality. Then, borrowing a page from the guy he's invited to speak at the Prayer Breakfast, he compares teachers who engage in "revisionist history" to Hitler. I'm really regretting ever voting for this guy.   • Giant novelty scissors unveiled once more to cut the ribbon around the City's newest retail tax engine, BevMo, which opened in the Golden Valley Shopping center. The Golden Valley shopping center is to the City of Santa Clarita what the Valencia Marketplace (west of I-5) is to the County: a retail sales tax generator and, for the policy wonks among us, yet another instance of the fiscalization of land use.   • Third town hall meeting tonight with Mayor Bob Kellar at Valencia Valley school BEACON
  • Awesome COC Student piece about life in Awesometown: Lisa Carroll, COC student, writes about the SCV's rich history, "pristine" qualities, Valencia's "Master Plan" and family friendliness. But she also acknowledges the SCV's drawbacks, namely that the whole valley is one big fire trap, sits on a multiple fault lines, that heroin and opiate abuse among the population is "staggering" and most people her age can't wait to get out of town once they finish high school or COC. Pretty much echoes my own experience growing up here. COUGAR NEWS
  • Great story about a dedicated public servant, Artie Thompson, who has served in the National Guard and with the LASD for a few decades as a school Deputy who put on puppet shows for kids at school as well as a Search and Rescue specialist. He's officially retiring this year, but will remain as a Reserve Deputy in the LASD SCV station. SIGNAL

    Correct Gobstopper, and the meeting is in Saugus, not Valencia. The third Town Hall Meeting is tonight Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room at Rosedell Elementary School located at 27853 Urbandale Avenue.

    The President put in another strong LGBT statement of support at the very tail of his press conference today, too. It's become a lot "safer" for politicians to show their support these days.

    If Joe is comparing schools "indoctrination" to Hitler, and Joe is president of the school board, wouldn't that make Joe the Führer? What is he saying exactly? Also, it would be helpful if he would actually link to where is gets this information, such as a school teaching bestiality or our youth practicing abstinence as being the cause of reduced pregnancy rates.

    What the **** is high capacity ammunition? If you are going to use firearms terms in order to make them sound evil you should at least have it make sense. I assume you ment high capacity magazine, high velocity ammunition, or hollow point ammunition? All of which are actual terms. BTW I'd love for you to define what high capacity is? If a standard capacity magazine issued by the manufacture of a handgun is 15-17 rounds, then is high capacity anything over that? Double that? Tripple that? (And we are only talking about handguns here, not the standard capacity 30 round magazine of AR and AK variants.) You should probably also mention that the firearm was possessed illegally. Simply having a firearm on him is not a story. It's the fact that he owned it illegally, it wasn't registered, that makes it important. We don't know how he obtained it, but if it wasn't registered in California then it was an illegally possessed firearm which is a big distinction over a legally owned firearm.

    So he typed "high capacity ammunition" instead of "high capacity magazine"?...meh. The criminal complaint filed uses the term "large capacity magazine"...it's not really Jeff's duty to debate at what point something becomes "high capacity" (or large capacity).

    Nah, I'm not shutting any one down in this discussion. Everyone gets their two cents (me included). The seeming overall criticism from the OP that Jeff is being biased here against gun owners, is overblown in my opinion...the ammunition/capacity error is not a big one, and the "high capacity" issue is tangential, as you say...

    Yeah totally blew it on that one. I do know the difference, being a pistol owner myself. I'm a little rusty on the blogging; I'll be more accurate next time. I'm not up to date on CA law but I think even my Beretta ten round magazine is considered high capacity now.

    Thanks for clearing that up Jeff, I figured it was an oversight, but if it wasn't, well, something had to be said. I can't speak for Patrick, but I am tired of people that know nothing of guns (I'm not saying that's anyone here, I'm referring to the talking heads or policy makers we see on TV) conflating semi automatic with automatic, as if they are the same thing. They are as similar as a Volt is to a monster 4X4. So, Jeff, Parabellum?

    So glad I didn't vote for Messina; no guilt here. History should be taught with all points of views, not just the ones that make our country appear to be the greatest. If we are to learn from mistakes made in the past (hence, grow from those mistakes) then it is necessary to hear all the bad that goes along with our history. Our forefathers did kill (slaughter) mass amounts of Native Americans when coming to this country. Whats wrong with teaching our children about the slave owners that came and established plantations on this new land? Why does Mr. Messina not want the 'ugly' to be taught? Where is Mr.Messinas proof that pregnancies are down due to abstinence, and not birth control? And if Mr. Messina in so outraged (and asks us to feel the same) why won't he share with his readers which school district is teaching bestiality? It's mandatory teaching according to him, so why doesn't he state which school district is teaching children which "styles of sex are permissible as long as you are properly instructed in technique and safety." Perhaps if parents knew they may not move to that district. He'd be doing them a favor, no? I will agree that our schools in this 'country' need to get up to speed with other schools in the world as far as math and sciences, as well as English and 'history' (all aspects). But there is more to learn than just the fundamentals and I think our young people can handle it all.

    History shows that the state's role becomes of oppressing the people rather than serving them. The causation of this should become evident with some thinking. We should not be teaching young people what to think, we should be teaching them how to think. Critical thinking is the key to creating a socially healthy society. Our education system is designed to churn our obedient consumers and indoctrinated careerists. We need to develop problem solvers, not passive consumers who won't question why they are legally human collateral to the Federal Reserve.

    Here's a bit of history that I'm sure Mr. Messina wouldn't want our children to know, yet there's evidence. http://news.yahoo.com/scholars-cannibalism Yes children, our founding fathers/settlers resorted to eating each other in order to stay alive due to food shortages. What can we learn from this? How can we make future droughts, flooding or freezing weather from keeping us from starving?
