- Book 'em dano! Some crack reporting today from KHTS' Smith, who says that despite our years-old ban on water softeners in this community, some 250 to perhaps 1000 homeowners still have these old-style water softeners at their homes. Some 8,000 other SCV homeowners went to the trouble to dispose of their softener devices years ago and together reduced the amount of chloride in the river by 50mg, a huge, important amount when we're just a few miligrams shy of complying with these laws. Sanitation officials say the devices still in the ground around the SCV may not be in use, but they can see each morning salinity levels rise. Owners caught with the units face a $1000 fine or 30 days in jail. I vote for the latter. No telling if the removal of 250-1000 water softeners would get us below the allowed limit 100 miligrams per liter limit. KHTS'
- As AV goes, so goes the SCV: Shenkman & Parris have filed a lawsuit to stop Palmdale from holding its at-large municipal elections as scheduled in November. Expect the same high-stakes drama in the SCV come late winter 2014 just as our Council election kicks into high gear. AV TIMES
- Hiker rescued, part 1: Great story today about a local newlywed couple who were hiking this week off the Walker Ranch trailhead in P-Canyon when they heard the faint cries of a man in distress. The man, whose name has only been revealed as Miguel, was hard to spot but eventually Tyler Knapp, the husband, worked his way down to the stranded and injured man, while his wife called 911 from a perch. S&R forces moved in, rescued the man via helicopter, and Miguel is recovering at a hospital after spending 4 days and nights in P-Canyon, surviving off Tonyon berries and his own urine. SIGNAL, CBS2
- Hiker rescued, Part 2: So what was Miguel doing out there? He told his rescuers he had no car nearby, lives in the Tujunga area, and was there for four days. Don't want to cast aspersions but my money is on covert part farm, as those are periodically busted in that beautiful area.
- Another touching story. SCV you're so sweet! Lisa Morse, an SCV resident and baker extraordinaire, died of pancreatitis some seven years after she ate some food at the mall (unknown if it was our mall, but the connection IS made in the story). But Lisa always had a dream to sell her own confections and now her family is honoring her memory by baking and selling "My Sister's Caramel Crunch" online and at the Studio City Farmer's Market. - The Castaic creep suspect who allegedly speared his dog and cat in June skipped out of his arraignment hearing and was arrested by, of all things, Amtrak Police. So now he can expect to be arraigned on the animal cruelty charges and perhaps something related to attempting to flee the slow-grinding wheels of justice in Los Angeles County. SIGNAL

- New leadership, a rising stock price, and the conversion of its space into a 3 dimensional marketing battleground between tech giants still doesn't make Best Buy a good place to shop says Matt Yglesias, a blogger I read. He's right. BB still sucks most of the time but you can find deals there occasionally. If our only Best Buy leaves town, to whence shall I go to gaze upon the latest in technology? Target? The Apple Store? Best Buy is all we have left people.
