  • Layoff Notices for Castaic: As the Castaic Union School District tries to figure out how to cut $4.1 million for next year's budget, the board approved preliminary layoff notices for more than 40 staff. Apparently the district hasn't yet considered just approving charter schools left and right to make some extra money. The Signal
  • Trashy Plan for Art Students: CalArts spent some time at Chiquita Canyon Landfill this week, searching for trash to transform into work of art that may earn them scholarships. The Signal
  • Detectives Looking for Stabbing Witnesses: Deputies with the Sheriff's Station's COBRA team are looking for witnesses to come forward after a Jan. 25 Saugus stabbing that sent a 15-year-old to the hospital. KHTS
  • Aimed at Protection: "Some of California’s most violent sexual predators can be released back into society if complete information is not available to prosecutors and defense lawyers at the time the predators’ cases are being reviewed." Sen. Fran Pavley has introduced two bills focused on offering more protection for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. KHTS
  • Discovery Has Officials in the Pits: "The facilities are close to county roads but partially hidden behind earthen berms. At one pit this week, waves of heat rose from newly dumped water, and an acrid, petroleum smell hung in the air." Water officials in Kern County have discovered a much larger number than thought of unpermitted — and unmitigated — pits where wastewater is dumped after its use in oil production. LA Times
  • More Local Oscar Gold: During the Academy's Scientific and Technical awards, an Agua Dulce movie pro won an award for his design of an improved self-propelled and drivable vehicle/camera platform. KHTS
  • Will Postal Campaign Deliver Results?: The city is trying to rally the support of residents to lobby the Postal Service to keep a post office in Newhall. The longtime Lyons branch recently closed when the lease was up, with an interim office in Stevenson Ranch open while the USPS decides what to do. KHTS
  • Passing the Half-Century Mark: "It was really amazing to see the current students and former students connecting and reliving the history of the school." Educators, students and past students celebrated the 50th anniversary of Leona Cox Community School. The Signal
  • A Whole Lot of History: An aircraft boneyard (hundreds of decommissioned or unused planes parked out in the desert) is high on my bucket list of places to photograph. For the time being, here's a huge stitched satellite image of a boneyard in Arizona. Gizmodo
  • Thursday is Back on the Calendar: With this brutal SoCal winter winding down, the city's Thursdays @ Newhall lineup of events is coming back, starting on March 5. SCVNews
  • Rumors of Rain: A storm headed out of the Northwest is forecast to hit Southern California this weekend, which could mean snow at the 3,500-foot level. Daily News
  • A Life of Commitment: "What I want people to get out of this story is my dad's commitment to serving his country and loving his family. What we felt was keeping them alive was the will to live, and that they didn’t want to let go of each other." After 67 years of marriage, a California couple died just hours apart, holding hands. ABC

    When the "boneyard" at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson was known as MASDC, its motto was a picture of a roadrunner with the inscription "We fly if we have to"
