A Fine day for Golf in Santa Clarita

Attributed to Jeff Wilson (editor-supplied)

The weather yesterday was absolutely perfect: a high of 75 degrees, light breezes, warm sunshine and crystal clear skies. In other words, it was the perfect day to golf and take some pictures on Vista Valencia’s “Chica” golf course.
I’m not a golfer. In fact, yesterday marked my first time playing golf, ever. I’m a reasonably successful professional, with many colleagues who regularly blow off steam (or avoid family time) on golf courses around the SCV, but I never really picked it up.

That’s probably because one summer I served as caddy when I was thirteen years old. I caddied for a wealthy and popular dentist who’s gentle manner and humorous disposition won him much affection and business in the community.

On the links, however, he was entirely different.

This dentist could curse with the best sailors in the world. More than once I had to duck and dodge after he threw a golf club at me following a botched putt or a terrible drive. I had gone through a caddy orientation and knew the basics of golf etiquette, but I wasn’t prepared for having a $300 driver hurled at me along with a string of profanity.

Golf, I figured, frustrated even the best of men. So why bother?

Fast forward to yesterday. My wife and I were looking for something fun to do outdoors and decided to take in a round of golf at the public Vista Valencia golf course. They have a “Chica” course that’s taylor made for beginners.

It turned out to be a fun but frustrating experience. I’m terrible. Even when I did connect with the ball, it never went where I wanted it to go.

But I see the appeal now, so I’m going to take some lessons. Anyway, here’s some pictures from yesterday.

That’s me, about to connect with the ball. The shot landed in the water but made a satisfying noise as it soared through the sky.

Golf: Frustrating yet strangely therapeutic
