    I just returned from the Discovery Park ribbon cutting ceremony here in Canyon Country. It is a lovely passive park with native and drought tolerant landscaping including shade trees, benches, public trail, etc. The area used to be a dumping ground for all those “inconsiderate residents” to bring their couches, tires, and other junk but now is a lovely and peaceful area adjacent to the Santa Clara River for residents to enjoy. Thank you to all who made this a reality for people (and their pets) to enjoy for generations to come!

    The Real Side with Joe Messina debuted on KHTS today. I didn’t catch it, but his website http://therealside.com refers to SCVTalk.com as “Local online liberal blog.” Hey, as long as you’re in there somewhere!

    Why do street names change every few miles in this town? Very confusing to a newbie, especially when trying to backtrack to get home. Why does this town have forced left turn lanes? I’m used to forced right turns, but forced left? I’m still scared to drive in the very left lane for fear that I will be forced to turn left onto some street that changes names six times. I could end up lost forever in the SCV. What does this town have against left turns out of shopping centers? And dear god, why isn’t there a wine and cheese store in this valley?! As weird and quirky as this place is, I adore my new hometown.

    Street names – IQ test. If you don’t get it, you failed. Left turn related questions – monkeybusiness … that is all. Wine and cheese – Trader Joes (low rent); Whole Foods (high rent) Now repeat after me: “There’s No Place like Awesometown, There’s No Place like Awesometown … ” Wait … you’re not one of those Stevenson Ranchers are you? (Where’s my suspicious eyes emoticon … left it around here somewhere …)

    This is a riot! I grew up in SCV but haven’t lived there for about 15 years, however my parents and a sibling are still there. Every time I visit I’m always confused and even trying to stay on the main drags (as they were) has become a little less reliable. I’m never sure what lane to be in. I can use this as a cheat sheet when I visit next month.

    Wine – I recommend All Corked Up off Golden Valley. AMAZING selection. They have a giant warehouse that is climate controlled and deeply stocked. Also have lockers for you to store your collection in, and a wine bar with live music most weekends. The food there is junk… mostly just Costco stuff warmed… but the cheese platter is nice to munch on. They have an excellent selection of wines in the bar. I was a member there for 2 years, and gave it up, only because my wine fridge at home got too full!!! As for cheese…. Whole Foods or Trader Joes… But I make the trip down to the Artisan Cheese Gallery in Studio City when I want the good stuff!

    I recommend Vino 100 on Newhall Ranch Road at Copper Hill (a few doors down from Chipotle). Great wines, reasonably priced. My husband and I also joined their wine club. At $40/month it fits within our budget. What’s really great is that they allow us to pick the wines to take home. We’re invited each month to a members tasting to sample four wines, learn about each, and pick two. Even when we don’t know anyone there, folks just gravitate to each other to discuss the wines. Always a good time.

    Thanks for the wine store recommendations. I’ve been to All Corked Up, but it was quite a while ago. Haven’t been to Vino 100 yet. When I say wine and cheese store, I was really hoping for a dedicated store to just wine and cheese. I always wish whenever there’s a vacancy in the shopping center next to our complex that a wine and cheese store would move in. The hubby always rolls his eyes at me. We got a 7-Eleven instead. Hubby was all 7-ELEVEN SELLS WINE AND CHEESE, THERE YOU GO, YOU GOT YOUR WINE AND CHEESE STORE.

    You’re hubby is funny. There is also Italia Panetteria & Deli. They have cheese. I don’t know if they have wine. They should… if it’s a true Italian store.

    Thanks, Tim. I love it up here! My favorite name changing street is Calgrove/The Old Road/San Fernando Road. I used to use that route to bypass some of the freeway during rush hour. It was quite some time before I realized that street changed names three times. I forgot about Newhall/Railroad/Main/Bouquet. Honestly, I don’t think I even realized it changed names four times until now.

    I’m in Newhall. I actually live in Jeff’s complex. It was a total fluke that I found his site and even more of a fluke that we found out that we live in the same complex.

    Hi Kelly. You are very welcome. I also plan to walk my dogs on the trail at Discovery Park. It is quite peaceful and serene away from all the traffic and noise. There is a drinking fountain /trough for our canine friends as well as a water feature in the works. There already is a people fountain, benches, shade trees, etc and a nice shade structure (Gazebo) coming soon. I hope to see you out there and thanks for the FIFA mention. I have a younger cousin who plays professional “fútbol” (soccer) in España but he is not on this World Cup team. Soccer players are the “rock stars” in Spain. Needless to say, no one is sleeping. They are all celebrating. And Spaniards know how to celebrate! On a more somber note, I will take this opportunity to thank you and all the other generous people who have helped the Garnica family during this time of tragic loss.

    The ORANJE felt that they had to goon it up to frustrate Espana’s mid-field game and they took the chance that the referee would not want to impact the outcome by issuing red cards (which were probably justified a couple of times). This almost paid off since one could feel that they were just trying to get it to penalty kicks where it is a real lottery. Our family had a rooting interest in the ORANJE since our oldest son is leaving in August for a semester abroad at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics. Now he is hoping that the young Dutch ladies will need the sunshine and comfort that only a Southern Californian can provide.

    What a fantastic opportunity to study abroad for the young master Myers. I am sure he will find the Dutch people to be very welcoming and the art exhibits exceptional. Dutch artists are not known as the “Dutch Masters” for nothing. The Flemish artists are no slouches either.

    Hi, Berta, thanks again, look forward to taking the dog out to the park. Our family loves soccer and my husband is a long time soccer player and now referees for youth soccer. (This is how we are acquainted with the Garnica family). I understand from my Futbol fans, that soccer players are the top athletes of their countries, and you really appreciate it after seeing the brutal matches and sheer physicality and endurance of the game. That is really cool you have a professional futbol player in your family, I am happy for Spain and their victory. When I watched the match on Sunday, I thought this is like rugby with the way the players were tackling each other! Re.the Garnica tragedy, everyone I talked with about it, made comments like- “That could have been me and my family”, or “We sat there in the same spot at Islands last year”. It’s heartwarming to see people come together to support this family.

    KLB: Although I think a wine and cheese store would be cool, I think Santa Clarita needs a Beer Bar. A Beer Bar with good, quality, unique, imported beers. It should have special occasion beers took, that way other beer fanatics from outside the Valley would come and drink. Then we could steal Beer Fest from SF. BEER BAR! BEER BAR! BEER BAR!
