Snow New Years in SCV!

I was skeptical, but I, along with a hundred Twitter friends of mine, can confirm that big, glorious, unique snowflakes are falling on the SCV this afternoon.

Not just in the mountains around Acton or in the Newhall pass. No. On the valley floor in the heart of the SCV.

It’s even starting to stick to roofs and bushes:

It’s not hard to understand why. You can almost smell the snow outside. It’s bitterly cold for a January afternoon in Santa Clarita. The various weather stations uploading to Wunderground.com agree:

Update 4:24pm

After a break in the snow for about an hour, it’s now starting to fall again, only this time there is no rain and the flakes are big, heavy and wet. It appears to be sticking. If this keeps up we could wake up to the biggest snow day in the SCV since the late 1980s.

Update 5:05 PM

This stuff is really starting to stick. If the roads aren’t snow covered, they’re very slushy. The white stuff is accumulating everywhere! Be careful out there. Here’s some pics from my pre-sundown walk around near Lyons & Apple Streets:

    Of course SOMEONE had to sully this beautiful snow day with argumentative politics, didn’t they! The theory behind global warming isn’t that the whole planet completely warms up, but that extreme weather patterns develop where none existed before, as in snowstorms in areas geographically located in temperate climates, such as Los Angeles. One could argue that this is actually a sign of a change in our global weather patterns as a direct result of global warming. I, however, think it’s just a fluke snowstorm this time. We’ve had them before in the SCV. I’m sure Fox “News” is having a field day with this in between their commercials for bomb shelters and food insurance.

    Guru I don’t think yesterday’s snow can be used as an example of new extreme weather conditions in Santa Clarita. It snowed here around 1975 also. I have pictures of my boat with a layer of snow on it back then and I have a similar picture taken yesterday.

    Yep, Fox OpEd channel is again spilling nonsense about global warming using the snow storms to make their partisan conservative political points not realizing that the ‘mean’ (the original writer needs to look this up in a dictionary) global temperature continues to rise, we will indeed see more dramatic weather. I hope our common future isn’t left up to people who lack any scientific background . . .     The rise in the ‘mean’ global temperature does not ‘mean’ we need to bankrupt our national economies with nonsensical regulations that will do nothing to stop that rise in the ‘mean’ global temperature. That is the point in mocking a hypocritical blowhard like Al Gore and his environmental crack-pot minions.

    Nate, one of the first things I’M SURE you learned in science class was that for something to be considered scientific fact, that “fact” MUST be testable in a scientific method. An experiment requires control. What are the “controls” in climate science, Nate? How can you possibly experiment in a controlled setting to determine if man caused emissions of CO2 cause warming. There are too many uncontrollable factors in place for one to take that leap. I’m not a “flat-earther” or so close-minded as to disregard data suggesting global warming is man-caused or partially man-caused. My beef is with Al Gore. He is a phony. He will not debate the issues with experts but will pronounce from behind the comfort and security of his lectern to like-minded people that “The science is settled” Bollocks! He is a fraud Nate and any opportunity I can get (even on a lovely day like this) I will call this phoney out.

    Walking down the ramp and across the parking lot in front of Smart & Final felt quite perilous. I am glad to be at home and to have tomorrow off from work.

    Very heavy at times here over by Costco… Slippery to walk around in. But making things look beautiful, for sure. Hope that it either snows us all in tomorrow, or lets up quickly… because I can’t imagine the commute tomorrow….

    Totally! We’re in the Costco area and those are my kids (plus some) w/the “snow man” (term used loosely LOL) and I’m socked at how much snow we have. They’re out sledding on the golf course right now! P.S., Hey Renee! The kids were excited to see R in the video

    I’m in the “Hooray it’s snowing” frame of mind. No single weather event is a sign of anything–warming, cooling, middling, whatever. It’s weather, not climate, and it’s swell weather so again, hooray.

    Thanks IHeart for the voice of reason on global warming. This is great to enjoy until I have to make that commute to the valley tomorrow at 5:00AM. Let’s all take a good look at conditions before venturing out tomorrow.

    Reports of black ice on the 14 and on the Old Road through the Newhall Pass. If this keeps up they may have to close the Newhall Pass . . . .

    Closing the Newhall pass isn’t anything remarkable anymore. It’s just another day in the SCV. If it’s not snow, it’s a lettuce truck overturning, or a gas truck, or a styrofoam container vehicle or something like that. The only escape from the SCV will be through Highway 126 if it happens though!

    My favorite part is watching the kids in the neighborhood try to gather enough snow to make a snowball and listening to the belly laughs. A great start to the new year, but I am thankful to avoid the commute tomorrow!

    Well you’re from WI so not a bandwagon fan, that part’s good. I actually predicted your Pack going to the SB and us being 8-8 so who would’ve thought they finished behind us. And winning the division title means we get a week break and only have to win 2 before going to the SB.

    That is because you couldn’t have predicted what happened to Green Bay in the injury department which makes their birth in the playoffs even more remarkable beating out the #2 seed in the NFL to do it. Green Bay looks alot like the 2007 Giants which came in stunned number 1 and 2 seed and then beat an undefeated team in the playoffs. Am I making that prediction no… but I will say Green Bay is better team the Bears. For the following reasons: Green Bay has weathered their storm and kept their locker room in order. They have corrected the mistakes like the 18 penalties that game the bears the win the first time, Green Bay ended up being one of the least penalized teams after that game. Green Bay has lost all their games by 4 points or less with a hard schedule, opposed to the Bears which got stomped by New England & Giants. They both have good defenses but where Green Bay separates its self is on offensive side of the ball. Where Bears are ranked 30th opposed to Green Bay who is ranked 9th. So I think some respect is in order. We might be 1 and done but an 11-5 is usually not good enough to win a division let alone lock down the second seed which means this NFC race is wide open and the teams are much closer than in past years. No team can be overlooked.

    Yes respect is in order and I give it to Rodgers, the OC, consistency, and the Receiver Corps. I think Rodgers is head and shoulders above Brett Farrrvrrrre and is also a stand up guy.

    I agree the Packers have done a great job getting to the playoffs as a Wild Card but they were projected to go to the SB so anything less is substandard in regards to their goals. They barely got there to begin with and IMO and most “experts,” they lack the stamina to get past the 1st round. Yes they had injuries but so have alot of teams, minus the Bears. To me unless its Aaron Rodgers, the Packers blaming their success on injuries is a lack of responsibility. Similar to us last year when we lost Urlacher and blaming our success on that, totally weak on our part. I dont put alot on statistics nor schedules since they are very deceiving. “Any Given Sunday” meant the Seahawks made it into the playoffs as the only team in NFL history to do such with a losing record. I said a few weeks back watch the Rams go ahead and get to the SB and win lolol. While it would be horrible to see, anything is possible. I see Aaron Rodgers, your Receiver Corps, and Mr Sackmaster as the strengths on your team but then again none of the three were good enough to stop Detroit but surprisingly were almost good enough, minus Rodgers, to almost beat the Pats IN New England. Like I said before, anything is possible and the playoffs tend to bring out a different type of player so we will have to see what happens on Sat/Sun with everyone. I predict the Bears will be in the NFC Championship game but anything past that is beyond me to guess.

    My brother and sister in law were foolish enough to come up from Burbank to head with my wife and me to Oggi’s for some pizza this evening and hopefully catch some of the Seahawks vs Rams…. They made it safe… we went over, and lo and behold…. no TV! Snow took out their dish, so no game on. No matter, the pizza was delicious as ever!

    Wow. Came here to check and see what folks had to say about the snow in the SCV. Instead, a few meatheads decide it’s a political issue? Jesus Christ, what a buncha sticks in the mud! Lighten the hell up would ya? So grumpy, so sad, so lost. Try enjoying something for once. Bi-partisan snow? Personally, I think Satan gave us this snow as a gift.
