Not since Henry Clay Needham, the stern-looking Newhallian who ran for President on the Prohibitionist Ticket in the 20s, has an SCVer reached such rarified political heights as our Congressman Buck McKeon.
Congressman McKeon has a kick-ass resume: boot salesman, Animal Husbandry major, school board member, city councilman & city founder, and, of course Congressman. Now he can add “Chair of the House Armed Services Committee” to his CV. He’s going to oversee a three quarters of a trillion dollar budget for the Defense Department. Not bad for a guy with humble beginnings who is neither a member of the greatest generation nor a baby boomer.
Though I disagree with just about everything he says and does, I’m happy for him and my town by extension. My loyalty to all things SCV (Because everything is better in Awesometown) has some strange consequences though. Like when the liberal HuffPost blog does a hit piece on my congressman -even if I somewhat agree with the substance of the piece- I get a little defensive. I squirm a little. I feel like we should be the only ones allowed to criticize him, and I even feel that may not be the right thing to do since he’s so powerful now yet hails from my neighborhood. ”Best face forward for the SCV, Jeff, best face forward! McKeon is one of us!”
But anyway, here’s to Buck McKeon. May his Chairmanship be richly rewarding to the DoD, McKeon’s military-industrial benefactors, the fightin’ 25th District, and, of course, Santa Clarita. Cheers!
