- Authorities have yet to file charges against Eric Earle, the 40 year old Saugus man suspected of murdering his live-in girlfriend, but he remains in custody on $1 million bail. The Signal says bruising was found on Karla Brada’s body, and coroner officials have ordered toxicology and neuropathology tests for her. Meanwhile, Earle appeared in court on another charge yesterday; on August 22 he apparently tried to beat up a Sheriff’s patrol car SIGNAL
- Deputies have arrested a former Santa Clarita building inspector on seven charges of felony bribery for allegedly accepting more than $30,000 in bribes “from a Sand Canyon resident who was building a house.” Craig Ingraham, 58, worked for the City’s building inspection team for 7 years and allegedly started accepting bribes in the spring of 2007. He left City employ in February. The City says they are going to review their policies and procedures “to prevent this from happening again.” SIGNAL
- The 32 year old Lancaster cyclist who was struck by a car driven by a Santa Clarita man has died. Nathaniel Rippee was on an organized club ride and both he and his wife were struck after two cars collided in an intersection. No charges have been filed because the drivers of both cars say they had a green light. Someone’s lying SCVNEWS
- A fire in a Castaic house Tuesday night was likely caused by incorrectly configured marijuana grow lights. No one was injured in the fire, but Deputies seized the homeowner’s pot plants because his “medical marijuana card” was suspicious. SCVNEWS
- Speaking of fires, Jim Holt at the Signal reports that the various federal, state and local agencies that fight fires in Southern California have finally developed a firefighting protocol that will ensure fires are attacked promptly regardless of jurisdiction. That’s in response to the debacle that occurred during 2009′s Station Fire. Also, LA County has leased the Super Scoopers again SIGNAL
- Triple digit temps will continue for the rest of the week in the SCV and winds are expected to increase as well according to the TIMES
- Interesting article on what’s probably the SCV’s biggest and most effective food factory: the SCV Food Service Agency. The agency delivers some 12,000 meals a day to area schools as part of the free and reduced lunch program. Last year it delivered 2 million meals to schools. The agency says its food is healthy (“There are no fried foods” says one worker) . Recall that Pavel Matustik, the agency’s friendly director, appeared on several episodes of Jaime Oliver’s Food Revolution TV show. Matustik wanted to bring Oliver into his kitchen but that was shot down by local schools SIGNAL
- Josh Mann of the SCV Economic Development Corporation says the SCV is primed to become an even more important location for defense and aerospace companies. It’s already home to several firms that support military, space, and airplane contracts. SCVNEWS
