  • American Jobs Act, President Obama’s unlikely-to-pass jobs bill, could provide some stop-gap funding to local schools according to the SIGNAL
  • Interesting article on a facility in Castaic that trains animals for movie and tv roles. Gidget, the famous Taco Bell chihuahua, is an alumnus of Studio Animal Services SIGNAL
  • Grocery workers and the management of Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons have reached a tentative deal that will avoid a strike. Local UFCW members will vote on the agreement at the Embassy Suites in Valencia SCVNEWS, SIGNAL
  • UCLA economists say that California’s economy won’t roll into another recession, but that doesn’t mean the news is good either. Economic performance in California in 2012 is likely to be just “Meh” with unemployment remaining at 12% throughout 2012. The report notes inland areas will continue to suffer more than coastal areas of the state LA TIMES
  • Latest McKeon scare tactic: Buck McKeon tells Fox News viewers that if defense cuts are made by the super committee (Rather than just cuts to earned benefits like SS or Medicare) the draft will possibly be reinstated. WAPO
  • Speaking of McKeon, now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is officially history, service members are coming out of the closet. NY TIMES
  • Lori Rivas takes a look at David Barton, an amateur historian with influence on the right. Interesting note: Barton is head of WallBuilders, which also employs Rick Green, the former Texas legislator who has conducted Constitutional learning derbies in the SCV and headlined a Mayors Prayer Breakfast here a few years ago SIGNAL
  • Slow news day: don’t blame me, blame my sources. It’s such a slow news day, the Signal is celebrating the retirement of a teacher (Congrats!) and publishing news/ads for University of Phoenix

    Why is Scott running for COC trustee if his eye is on the assembly seat-won’t this cause a special election and additional expense when he wins. Does his wife plan to run for elected office? Will he move to impeach Brown and Newsom for not defending Proposition 8 in the federal courts?

    Why is bigotry OK when endorsed by the majority? By this logic, the Japanese internment, laws banning inter-racial marriage, and slavery were all morally defensible actions of our government. My question for candidate Wilk: Do you have the courage to stand-up to your base when they are morally wrong?

    What do you call having an overwhelming desire and wish to deny rights to a group of citizens based on nothing which interferes with anyone elses freedoms? Attempting to influence others to join in your vendetta takes it to the next level of hate. Petz did post signs and continually pushed his anti-gay views, didn’t he? Please parse that, I know you will. Why is he the only poster to mention Prop 8 repeatedly? Wait for the video of the testimony to expose the lies tossed about by these types. This is no redefinition.

    The COC board doesn’t run special elections. The remaining board members interviews potential replacements and then appoints a replacement. This is how Scott first got on the COC board before he ran for and was elected to the seat in the following election. As far as why he is running, would you quit your current job before you got hired somewhere else? Not the being on the board is a regular job, but still just because he is running for assembly does not mean he will win it (even though he will). So it makes sense to run this year for his current seat, then next year for assembly.

    For Mr. Wilk: If one trains leaves New York City travelling at 85 miles an hour and another train leaves Reno at the same time, but travelling 75 miles an hour etc…..:-)

    For Scott Wilk: I presume you will run under the “No new taxes pledge”. California’s budget is about $4 billion out of balance (depending on what revenues really do). Since you are opposed to raising taxes, identify where the $4 billion in spending cuts will come from? How will you address dramatic cuts to the Community College, Cal State and UC funding over the past year? Where would any restored money come from? I just received a mailing from the Howard Jarvis taxpayer group that appears to want state spending to only increase based upon inflation and population growth. While the application of that principle sounds good on the surface, how do bond measures that seem to be approved by the voters every election then get paid for? What percentage of the current budget is related to paying for those bond measures?
