SCV is a Disaster Magnet

City Manager Ken Pulskamp tells disaster preparedness officials at a conference that the City of Santa Clarita has declared emergencies 11 times in its 24 year existence and that we’re a magnet for disasters:

“Unfortunately, we seem to be a magnet for disasters,” he said. “We were just a few miles from the epicenter of the Northridge earthquake and since then, we’ve seen fires and floods and death and destruction. I have more experience with disaster than I had cared to have when I started my career.”

You can add tornadoes to that list. This video was shot yesterday by Fox 11′s news helicopter up in Bouquet canyon:

It’s technically a dust devil but at this point, is there no natural disaster that hasn’t struck the SCV? We’ve had El Nino flooding, hellish fires, earthquakes, and damaging Santa Ana winds. Couple that with quarterly (or so) shutdowns of the I-5 in the Newhall Pass (when trucks carrying mattresses, eggs, or oil crash, or when goats wander on the freeway) and we live in a pretty exciting place, no? Doesn’t it feel like we’re in that old game Sim City and a twelve year old boy is clicking the disaster button?

All we need now is a plague of frogs or locusts and perhaps a meteor strike.

    Jeff, you forget the man-made globalist disaster which is about to happen if we don’t stop the city council from handing our sovereignty over to the United Nations.

    You would think that you wouldn’t want to stuff another 200,000 folks into a City that “seems to be a magnet for disaster”.

    Meteor strike? Maybe, but I like the odds of being hit by a piece of the UARS satellite that comes crashing to earth this Friday.

    The Bible promises followers of Jesus Christ that they will face persecution , hatred and deception by false prophets etc…the walk is not easy, and the recent record confirms this. The United States has historically been a safe home for people of all faiths..and no faith….we have been blessed by our First Amendment protection. So in Orange County evangelical atheists put up billboards attacking those of faith. Then they tear up the Bible—-let them try it with the Koran and let’s see what happens. Teacher Brad Johnson in Poway is told to take down our national motto “In God We Trust” from his classroom wall. A Mission Viejo couple is fined for having Bible Study in their home. The City of Costa Mesa was subject to harrassment by athiests for putting up the words “In God We Trust”. A speaker from the Jewish state of Israel is shouted down by militants at UC Irvine. Christians support Israel more than other any group in America. The Orange County Register questions the cost of putting the words “In God We Trust” on the wall of the Lake Forest City Hall. They suggest plastic rather than brass letters. The Crystal Cathederal and Robert Schuler…..oh never mind. So yes, I believe it ……and can support it with facts.

    Also, militant anti-Israelis are not a sign of an assault on Christianity, they’re a sign of an assault on Israel. Go ask the majority of Israelis if they’re Christian and I think you’ll find that answer very enlightening…

    Petz, I would support Christians in fighting anyone who is denying their right to worship or cause damage, whether physical or mental, by destroying a Bible. I don’t think it is right for people to denounce ANY religious group and the root cause tends to be they are acting out over pressure to conform while growing up. Well, you’re grown up now, so let’s start acting as such. The MSA where these students came from are not militant. Like I said before, you are an avid supporter of Israel but to the point you fail to see that the Palestinians, both Muslim and Christian, have lost their rights. Do you realize that there were churches closed and a prominent Palestinian priest who was tortured? You probably wouldn’t because it isn’t mainstream news but where is your outcry over the treatment of Christians there? And in Pakistan a judge condemned a Muslim man under the Blasphemy Law for attempting to burn a Bible. Just thought you should know.

    I think that 24 carat gold should be used. Why should government agencies be cheap when erecting public idols? There is enough money for bridges and such. The important things should come first anyway.

    While I agree that they should be allowed to meet, they have to be conscious of the zoning codes. This reminds me so much of a discussion I had with Joe on Tuesday when discussing why the Islamc Center of SCV does not have a facility. Very similar situation but this is by no means an “assault” against Christians.

    If your neighbors down the street were having twice a week poker games, with up to 50 people attending tying up the streets, making it impossible to park and tripling the traffic those days, would you consider that a problem? Or are these folks just excused because it’s a Bible study? That’s not religious persecution, that’s enforcing city codes. Good grief. 50 people is a respectable congregation. Get a real meeting place like everybody else does. Religious persecution is when you have to hide inside your house and draw your shades for fear someone outside might see you. And if that was a real problem, the pro-Bible billboards and our “God Loves U” street preacher wouldn’t exist. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill…

    City staff still playing Sim City, designing their own idealized wonderland and then fiercely defending it. My son used to play Sim City and if anyone else (like a City Council member) changed his design he would get really upset, just like the Santa Clarita staff members do.

    Enough anonymous cheap shots on the library. Visit on and fill up a comment card they will be glad to post them on the bulletin board in the front. Did the County ever do that ? The employees are trying damn hard to please the patrons and gratuitous attacks do not help . Visit us on Astronomy Day, October 1, 2011.

    I’m not anonymous. The city folks that watch this site know who I am. I gave the libraries a shot and have moved on to the county branch in Castaic. Eventually, it will improve at the city, when I do not know. Next time I will substitute some of the other city disasters in place of the library. We have the Benz Road debacle, the Decoro re-striping and re-re-striping, Ferry using city letterhead to disparage a candidate for the water board, the tens of millions wasted in their eminent domain proceedings for the CVC. I have no shortage of material.
