  • It’s election day in Santa Clarita! Santa Clarita city residents will be asked to vote for two for City Council members; vying for those two seats are two incumbents and three challengers. To catch you up on everything, I endorsed TimBen Boydston yesterday, Myers & I Heart played with turnout models, and Mike D. laid out his predictions. Find your polling place here. Tonight you can watch election returns live over at SCVTV, and SCVTALK may have a live blog from the Council Chambers or at the least, analysis of the returns as they come in (we’re lazy and it’s supposed to rain tonight)
  • Just in time, Good news watch #1: The “Multipurpose” and “technology-centric” Newhall Library gets good some good ink in today’s Signal, with gems like the following: “Residents will be able to check out laptops – complete with wireless internet access” and “At the end of the day, we met everyone’s expectations,” for the library. Wow, the laptops have wifi?! And everyone is happy? Token, single-sentence opposition in the sixth graf. I support the library but to write a puff piece like this on election day? SIGNAL
  • Just in time, Good news watch #2: “The City of Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County, and the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation announced Monday that the California Department of Housing and Community Development has approved all details of the new Santa Clarita Valley Enterprise Zone designation, which means businesses in the expanded zone area may now begin processing vouchers for qualified employees and taking advantage of the tax savings available through the program.” SCVNEWS, SIGNAL So far the EZ Program has cost taxpayers $199 million; for that we’ve seen 976 new jobs created, a cost of $203k per job.
  • Supervisor Antonovich has raised $363,000 “with many contributions coming from developers in his district” as part of his reelection bid for 2012. But he faces token opposition at best for what will be his last term as a Supervisor. The LA Times says all the supervisor races this year are “surreal” like that LA TIMES
  • Nice! A retired couple from Canyon Country matched five of six numbers in last month’s Mega Millions lottery and have won $228,955 SIGNAL
  • Founding CEO of Bank of Santa Clarita suddenly leaves post SCVNEWS
  • A Canyon Country condominium complex has been struggling with crime recently, but the HOA says it has trouble recruiting people for a neighborhood watch program SIGNAL
  • Speaking of: a love triangle spat turned stabby late in February in Canyon Country as a married man returned to his home after being gone for a year and found his wife living with another guy. Stabbing ensued, trips to the hospital followed and attempted murder charges are pending KHTS
  • The Hart District will release conceptual renderings of the new Castaic High School at tomorrow night’s Board meeting. Officials have backed off plans to build a two story high school buildings; instead the district will save on grading & elevator costs by building a larger and flatter campus. The District hopes to complete the EIR by late summer 2012. A name has not been chosen yet for the high school (Buck McKeon High? Antonovich High?) KHTS
  • The dozens of emaciated and sick farm animals rescued from the Canyon Country “backyard butcher” are recovering and responding well to treatment according to Gentle Barn. But a female horse who had a large gash in her leg may not make it. SIGNAL
  • Real Life Church (the church for people who don’t like church) made a splash last weekend on Facebook by bringing a real live fully grown male lion onto the grounds of the Valencia church Sunday. PIC
  • Canyon Country COC Campus will host a star party on May 4 SIGNAL
  • Ouch: Letter writer wonders why City of Santa Clarita doesn’t Think Santa Clarita when it comes to buying $800k+ video systems for their buses LTE

    Today, is election day so please vote if you have not done so already! It is my pleasure to work on TimBen’s City Council campaign. Yes, we are still working today to make sure every voter knows Mr. Boydston will work with integrity for you on the Santa Clarita City Council and that he is asking your vote! TimBen’s local endorsements (listed on TimBen.com) will give you an idea of the community leaders that also agree he will make a excellent choice for City Council.

    Went to the polls at 7:15 this morning. First person there. Another low, low turnout. Will be shocked if Kellar and Ender do not consider the trend of incumbents being re-elected.

    What is wrong with out political process when lose $200K in tax revenue for every job created (with some of these at places like WalMart and Big 5)? How can we legitimately spend $1,000 per square foot for a new library? And some would say this is responsible fiscal management by the City?

    At least we taxpayers get something we can use out of the library building. I don’t think $1,000/sq ft is particularly unreasonable given the quality of the construction (steel beams, stone etc) The guy who owns Fatburger is getting EZ tax credits for hiring workers at the new Fatburger in Westridge. He probably pays them so little that they don’t have health care, so, as a result, they’re on the public dime. Two years ago the City officially opposed an amendment to the EZ law that would have required EZ recipients to cover healthcare for the subsidized workers they hire.

    Hats off to the SCVT team for being the only place anywhere in the world to cover our local politics with this much detail and without being afraid to offer up opinion or analysis that may be unfavorable to the incumbents or any candidate. I’m looking forward to live team coverage tonight. I was thinking last night and figured that The Signal would release some sort of puff piece on something in our city. It’s not surprising they chose the library. Will have to see the print edition, but my bet is this is front page ‘news,’ above the fold at that. A month ago, The Signal came out with their endorsement of Kellar, a quasi-endorsement of TimBen and a thorough bashing of Laurie Ender but endorsing her. Since that time, they have been brought into line. A second editorial was just released two days ago that makes no mention of Ender’s “lack of transparency,”"arrogance” and not inspiring “trustworthiness” that they talked about in their first editorial. Furthermore, The Signal also stopped printing letters to the editor that mentioned any candidates, something I hope is discussed in more detail here at some point. I suspect that some horse heads showed up in some editor(s) beds around town.

    You are correct, the library piece is at the top of the front page in big, bold headlines. It appears that Boydston’s troops have been busy making a big last push. Found another flyer on my doorstep last night, hand delivered. Also a woman was holding a huge Boydston sign at the McBean southbound 5 onramp this morning. Both votes at our house are bullets for Boydston.

    Are you referring to the library construction pictures or the pictures of the ousted bank execs? The bank execs look happy, which is strange given that Altobello says she was terminated without cause.

    Since I was referring to the library comments, I was referencing the library photos. With respect to the banker photos, I don;t think that they were taken in conjunction with the article. They are probably “file photos taken in better times.

    I was being deliberately obtuse, Phil, but it didn’t translate well here in cyberland. Perhaps the happy smiling faces next to the library pictures were a not-so-subliminal suggestion on behalf of the Signal.

    Thank, goodness! Finally a library that will have an electronic book sorter – “Children interested in the new electronic book sorters will be able to watch the sorting through a glass window as they enter the library…….” Forget looking at books – we’ve got a book sorter and Wi-Fi as well. Did the Ender campaign pay the Signal for this final piece of campaign literature on election day? Really, Signal – the timing and placement of this article is an insult to our intelligence as citizens and voters in the SCV.

    I don’t recall seeing the book sorter on the list, but Cheryl, you may recall that WiFi and computers were high on the list of desires mentioned at the public meetings. A mechanical book sorter is probably a good thing too because it would only be needed for a larger number of books. So, it would appear that there will be a lot of books, both to look at by the little ones and to read by the older ones.

    Titanic departed on it’s doomed voyage April 10 from Southhampton, picked up passengers in France and Ireland…hit the berg at 11:40 pm on 4/14/1912.

    Are there any “Election Day” billboards or banners hanging from the paseos around to remind people of the election?
