  • Chloride! You thought it was just something you learned about in high school chemistry, but according to the plans released yesterday by the SCV Sanitation District, it may cost each homeowner hundreds of dollars a year to reduce chloride in our water for downstream users.   • Mayor Bob Kellar resents that people "politicize" the Mayors Prayer Breakfast each year. That said, he wishes Joe Messina's group would remove the word "Mayor" from the title of the event. Kellar will be attending as Mayor and will speak along with Brad Daucus, a notorious anti-gay activist who has likened stopping same sex marriage to stopping Hitler. SIGNAL, KHTS
  • Re: the above. Mr. Mayor, no one was upset with the last year's speaker,a  double amputee athlete who talked about prayer in his life. 
  • Wow, that was fast: After a brief public outreach effort, talk of a grand "public-private partnership" and utopian visions of guaranteed 45 mph speeds through the Newhall Pass, the I-5 toll lane/HOV project is on Metro's agenda tonight, as a consent calendar item, meaning it won't even be discussed unless someone asks for it to be pulled.   • * Meanwhile, Elon Musk -founder of PayPal & Tesla, SpaceX pioneer, real life Tony Stark- says he'll give $50,000 to the City of LA to widen the 405. "I've super had it" with congestion on the notorious 405 Freeway. Two questions: can't we have a altruistic and wealthy benefactor help build SCV infrastructure and secondly, hasn't anyone heard of induced demand? LA TIMES
  • 29 year old SFV man to be charged with manslaughter in boat/jet ski collision on Pyarmid Lake last summer that resulted in the death of a 16 year old Russian. SIGNAL
  • A blogger in San Bernardino complains that police, and fire officials' salaries are automatically set "at the average of 10 like sized cities in California." The ten cities in California San Bernardino uses to set its police and fire salaries include Santa Clarita, whose median income is $78k, vs San Bernardino's, which is $35k. Of course, we don't even have our own police department; perhaps rules and charters like this are part of the reason why. PRESS ENTERPRISE
  • Awesometown blog details new development, Villa Metro, a community of 315 "Mediterranean-inspired" homes ranging in size from 1600 sq. ft. to nearly 2000 sq. ft. The development will be built in the open space area across from the Soledad Metrolink station by the bowling alley I guess, near where there used to be hot air balloon rides. The blog says future residents will have easy access to  "Southern California's regional rail network," a statement so rich in irony considering we used to have train tracks to the coast until developers ripped them up and put up a parking lot.   • New ABC family drama with hot 20 something female lead, set in Boston, will be filmed almost exclusively in Santa Clarita. And how about this? "Chasing Life" is adapted from a Spanish-language telenovela. SCVNEWS
  • What to eat: Canyon Country is allegedly getting a Sizzler's, but losing a chocolate confectioner 
  • SCV Beacon promises a new, "much more robust online publication" starting this weekend. It will have "expanded and exclusive content that you will not find anywhere else in the Santa Clarita Valley....in a whole new format." Probably just an update to his WordPress theme I'm thinking. Nevertheless exciting to see what's coming, Dave Bossert has been blogging SCV just a few months longer than I have. BEACON
  • Speaking of the Beacon, the one thing that keeps me coming back is Big John Boston TIME RANGER. I love these columns; I always looked for them in the Signal when I first moved here. In this week's edition a US President may have visited Saugus and ate at the Saugus Cafe 122 years ago today (or maybe he didn't), an ad in the Signal from April 25, 1933 tells beer lovers that prohibition is finally over and you can pick up "Real Beer, as long as it lasts" starting at 6am, and on this date in 1973, the Newhall-Saugus area as it was known at the time officially became the Santa Clarita Valley by a 5-0 vote of County Supes. So I guess it's our 40 year old birthday today! We should build a hill-side sign to celebrate! TIME RANGER

    The reason that cities key their salaries to comparable cities in population and area and not median income is because if they didn't, then they would have a very hard time being able to attract qualified recruits. Think about it with this hypothetical (salaries are obviously made up cuz I'm too lazy to do the research right now). I want to enter the law enforcement world. I can take a job at LAPD, paying $90k, Burbank, paying $85K, Simi Valley, paying $87K, Pasadena paying $81K, Glendale paying $88k or stay here for the newly formed Santa Clarita PD and be paid $55K. Where do you think the top applicants will go? Correct answer: Anywhere but Santa Clarita. WIthout a doubt, its difficult to say "we pay cops 2x the median income of the city" but when you're in a competetive marketplace, where you need to be very selective in who you hire (you get a lot of applicants to start in law enforcement... but once you narrow down and eliminate those with questionable backgrounds you're left with very few still) then you need to make sure you keep salaries and benefits comparable.

    Sizzler story is on-line at the signal website, under the business section. Article mentions bevmo, Jersey Mike's and Sizzler moving into the Golden Valley Plaza.
