Halloween week with some truly spooky news in the SCV.
October 28, 2013 – Daily Brief
- The Sanitation district will hold a formal vote tonight to decide which of the four options we've been given to clean up chloride in our river to endorse ahead of a 10/31 deadline. As we've discussed ad nauseam here, we've got more chloride in our discharge water than allowed by state law, the downstream folks in VeCo claim it hurts their crops, and everyone who is anyone in the SCV doesn't want to touch this with a ten foot pole because resolving it is going to cost residents and business quite a bit. And so it falls on to Laurene Weste & Bob Kellar, both Councilmembers who also sit part time on the Sanitation Board, to choose death by hanging or strangulation or electrocution or drowning. The latter will likely be chosen and if it doesn't work and the SCV isn't dead yet, we're to get option 2 later. SIGNAL
- After the Signal raises the issue of the fake PTA mailer Mike Devlin exposed last week, SUSD incumbent Doug Bryce, one of the three who paid to be on the mailer and the only one who acted like an aggrieved victim when caught, says he's sorry if anyone was upset by a mailer that was obviously not intended to deceive voters. Uh-huh. SIGNAL
- Meanwhile at Newhall School District, incumbents and challengers alike debated some issues and talked about how awesome the NSD is, because well, it really is. Board Member Phil Ellis said there's not much more room to go up concerning NSD's API scores, which are at 905 on a scale of 1000. Also the incumbents and challenger alike expressed skepticism over the need for charter schools, with Christy Smith, an incumbent, making the strong statement that "I think we're going to look at this a decade or two decades from now and see that the charter school movement has fractured our public education system." - And over at the Sulphur Springs District, we got to hear the candidates answer a question that comes up from time to time in these parts: wouldn't it make more sense to consolidate elementary districts with the sole junior high & high school district in the SCV? Think of all the effeciencies gained by doing that. But that, of course, would mean the end of several nascent political careers on local school boards. So SSSD board candidates, what do you think of that? SIGNAL
- Finally let's give it up for our collective SCV youths, who are in better shape than other kids in California according to Perry Smith at KHTS via SCVNEWS
- Deputies arrest two men in connection with a string of robberies in Newhall and perhaps the recent stabbing of a woman in the Wiley Canyon area. Looks like they tracked down the duo by finding stolen phones the men had taken from an individual in the Valencia Industrial center. SIGNAL
- HashTagWin: "We had no idea there was a freestyle abattoir upstream...always thought it was meth labs!" one commenter says about the news that the Backyard Butcher has been sentenced to jail for three years after getting caught again slaughtering animals in an inhumane way in Canyon Country. SIGNAL
- Supe Antonovich is the most influential SCVer: At an award dinner Thursday, the Supe was named #1, told the audience how pleased he was with the award, then grabbed the mic and in a serious tone said "Antonovich, out," dropped the mic, and wandered off on horseback up Agua Dulce way. And that's how our Supe, the Most Influential of the Most High 51 Influential SCVers rolls. SIGNAL
- Holy Smokes and Fair Ladies: 13,000 spectators went to Real Life Church's Halloween extravaganza on Saturday night. 13,000! You only see numbers like that for high school football games. Damn sad I missed it. They had jousting and horses and a medieval theme. And most importantly as a car-dependent dad, they made parking easy. SIGNAL
- We really ought to do something about speeding on Decoro: A man's car flipped over onto its side on Decoro Thursday. The man inside the car, which flipped over onto its side, was injured by the car's decision to flip over on the controversial road SIGNAL

- Dave Bossert upset that the City of Santa Clarita didn't ThinkSCV during last week's Council meeting when it decided to haul solid waste out of the SCV and to some other community's landfill. He wonders why we would do that when we have Chiquita canyon in town. And yes I think he's being serious. BEACON

- Petz has a new dog to guard campaign signs at his house. As he notes, Jose has big shoes to fill. Lucy guarded his signs for years and it was well known how fierce she was to Democrats or liberals who tried to steal Petz' signs for Whitman and McKeon and Schwarzenegger over the years. FACEBOOK
- Antelope Valley Dem Jorge Puentes is the third man to say he's going to run against Buck McKeon next year, but he already might be the most controversial. On Facebook, he volunteered to take some questions , and well one thing led to another and he up and admitted he's running for Congress in part because his wife, who is undocumented, can't get her papers unless she leaves the country. That may play well up in the desert, not so much here in the SCV I think. FACEBOOK
