November 15, 2011 Daily Brief-KHTS Took The Bait Edition

  • Combine an out of state blogger, the one sided accounts of parents and the student involved due to student confidentiality rules, and KHTS (but no one else) takes the bait on allegations of racism and expulsion in the gilt edged Newhall School District.  My only comment:  While Candy Fleece, principal of Stevenson Ranch Elementary, probably has zero sense of humor but I am confident that the actions she took were well thought out, planned and executed and were probably the right thing.  UPDATE:  Here is the NSD policy on interdistrict transfers so we can all wildly speculate on Master Thomas’s reason for attendance at Stevenson Ranch Elementary.  I am wildly hoping that one of his parents is a full time employee of the NSD so we can see how that goes over.
  • Lynn Haueter sends a victory note to Repubs all over the 38th district about her fantastic “victory” in the unopposed race for leadership.  Bio does not mention detailed circumstances of recent marriage to Bob Haueter.
  • Though he’s kind of a crazed right winger and sometimes practically a birther we still loves our Kevin Korenthal who recently finished a 100 mile bike ride to raise funds for challenged athletes.
  • Thrift shop coming to Canyon Country.  SIGNAL  article interviews people who probably just came back from a Tea Party meeting who can’t understand why the CITY does not exercise some socialist mercantilism to get them some nice stores to shop in.
  • Occupy Santa Clarita group decides they are upset about…bridges?
  • And in the most important story of the day, SCVNEWS  reveals that Canyon High School forfeits their win against Golden Valley on November 10.  Apparently, in the excitement of a huge lead and the last regular game of the season the Cowboys emptied their bench and played an ineligible player.  Significance?  Valencia Vikings are now the OUTRIGHT champions of the Foothill League and Golden Valley records their FIRST EVER Foothill victory.

    Congrats to Valencia. I always felt they were the league champs anyway because of them beating Canyon head to head. While I understand the Golden Valley administration is sensitive about kids wanting to transfer out of their school, the administration would be better served trying to better develop and support their own athletic programs than lodge this type of a complaint. It is too bad Canyon can’t just give back the 4th quarter when the substitutions happened because Golden Valley outscored them 14-7 over the period Canyon went to the bench. I have the utmost respect for the GV players, especially those who have stuck with the program the last four years and I would imagine this is not they way they would like GV to pick up their first Foothill league win. Like it or not, the Canyon Administration didn’t comply with the rules (however minor this instance may be) but the team collectively takes the hit. Best to move on and be successful in the playoffs.

    It’s the coach’s fault. They need to know who is eligible and ineligible to play. The fact they were not “careful” with the GV game shows a lack of respect. On the sports side GV is victim not so much of transfers but the general dilution of the pool of sports talent due to flattening enrollment and two (and eventually three) additional high schools.

    Just got through reading the ‘story’ on Newhall School District. The kid is in 6th grade and he not only has a theft incident under his belt (which the parents actually admit to) but other harassment incidents that they deny. He lives in Tesoro so it seems that now is a good time for him to go back to his home school district in Tesoro where he belongs. Maybe his parents can keep a closer eye on him there. By itself, this incident is harmless. Besides, this KTLA news guy does look like Obama in some of the pictures I googled and is a better match than that guy who plays Obama on SNL. I have a kid in the 6th grade in NSD. They have always treated us well and fair and the school and administrators are great to deal with. If they say there is a “history” with this kid, I am inclined to believe them.

    LM: This probably fizzles because to take it further (legal action) the parents would have to waive student confidentiality and there are probably some things they don’t want made public. If they are willing to admit to theft, which is pretty serious, what dark acts are they sitting on?

    Oh please , lesson that the children learn is that if they are offended or made to feel uncomfortable with a simple remark they can drive a child out of the district. Where is Phil Ellis when we need him? Is Newhall going to ban the American flag on Cinco de Mayo. Winger and his sister swing to the left-this is a well known fact in our community.

    Petz: Candy Fleece made this decision primarily after appropriate consultation, and she is not a person whose judgment I would question.

    It generally takes a lot more than one “simple remark” to be called into the principal’s office and sent packing, Petz. Don’t be so quick to accept the parents’ version of events. The District cannot violate the child’s confidentiality, yet the parents are free to make up whatever sort of story they like without having to prove a thing. I am very curious to know why this kid wasn’t at Tesoro del Valle in the first place, especially since Stevenson Ranch has historically been so crowded that children moving in to Stevenson Ranch have had to travel to other schools.

    I am quite upset that Jason Schaff the new executive editor for the Signal is allowing his political leaning to protect prominent local Republicans like Lynn Vakay/Haueter. Mr. Schaff removed factual comments and banned users who informed the public about her well known plaigerism incident. The same incident which got her banned from the newspaper he is now working for. I am also disappointed that Jim Holt, whom I am normally very fond of, wrote up Lynn Vakay/Haueter as just a “local woman” and made no mention of the fact she is unable to form her own opinion on a critical subject like health care reform. How is a person like this given a free pass by our newspaper and promoted to lead more people? This is a sad state of affairs when media embarrasses themselves by fighting for a point of view or political party rather then telling their subscribers the cold hard truth. I believe Mr. Scaff and the Signal owe the people of Santa Clarita and their subscribers an apology for withholding them from the truth about their own representative leaderships.     The Signal does not want to rock the boat on ANYTHING having to do with local politics or the city. They have shown this repeatedly over the past several years. Did you really expect something different from them this time?

    Looks like The Signal has thrown a curve ball to my statement as Natalie Everett pens an article about the disbanding of Citizens for Integrity in Government. It has the dirty details from the past including the $30k+ Ender pocketed. Maybe the reporters over there are having their hands untied a bit and it is starting to emerge little by little.

    I have a funny feeling that CIG will be resurrected in some new form, unless of course there are truly no serious candidates for City Council against the incumbents.

    Of course it will be resurrected. Santa Clarita Citizens for Better Government or some other nonsense like that will be the new name. My understanding is that G&L still needs to get each office building approved before construction, so they will still need to line a few pockets.

    “unable to form her own opinion on a critical subject like health care reform” Just like the Democrats in the House that approved Obamacare without reading the text of the bill. Nancy said it was OK (without reading it herself, I believe), so they went along withour forming their own opinions. I have no problem with a private citizen having difficulty forming an opinion on an important issue, but to have our elected officials voting and shoving down our throats a bill of which they have no understanding is reprehensible.

    Are you trying to excuse and rationalize the inability of the House Democrats in forming their own opinion about healthcare prior to approving Obamacare? Wasn’t health care what you posted about?

    Mike, I understand the plagiarism reference, however, he commented on her inablility to form her own opinion on healthcare. Obviously, he doesn’t care that Democrat House Members are equally unable to form their own opinions, although those opinions impact us. Lynn’s opinion or lack of opinion on healthcare is meaningless.

    Phil, Lynn chose to submit a column on healthcare reform to our local paper. Her opinion matters in this context. If she wasn’t comfortable with the subject matter enough to for her own opinion, she shouldn’t have submitted the column.

    Phil you are trying to hijack the conversation with this Red Herring. Health Care reform was the topic that was plagiarized by Lynn Vakay/Heauter, Health Care reform is not the topic that we are discussing. We are discussing why Jason Schaff has made it a point to protect prominent Republican figures banned by his own newspaper and attack those who haven’t forgot and exposed it.

Please tell me how I am hijacking the thread? If you don’t want others to comment on what you write, why in the hell do you write it? Mike, you seem to be confusing two different thoughts in Nate’s earlier comments – as is he.

    I believe you are smart enough to know what you are doing… It is obvious you have your own opinion on health care reform and I assume this is actually Phil Ellis typing, so kudos! You already you have a leg up on your new Republican representative for Los Angeles and she has Mr. Schaff in her corner to help erase her checkered past and everyone wins but the truth.

    What I do know, Nate, is that you like to post comments that you now seem to want to ignore (or perhaps you are just afraid to backup your words). Or are you saying that you didn’t meant what you said? Do words no longer mean what they say (when you say them) – shades of Alice. By the way, the Red Herring your referred to was your comment. Should we believe that this commnet was just a Red Herring? If so, why did you make it. How does the use of a Red Herring (as described by you in your words) add to your argument. I am certainly smart enough to understand what you are saying (Do you?). If you need help with what I am saying,the internet has available several Englsih disctionaries.

    Congrats to Kevin Korenthal for completing the Solvang Century! It is one of the hardest, but most beautiful rides and is rated so. Having completed it on at least 8 occasions in the past there is a lot of training and planning involved for all folks. The weather at start is typically cool and foggy, it also gets sunny, than windy along Vanderberg Grade near Lompoc. One year it rained and hailed as we left Santa Maria toward the Firestone Winery area and into the last leg near Los Olivos. Keep it up Kevin — but be careful out on the roads — we have way too many “statistics” out there

Also a comma after “humor” “I’m just sayin’…..”
