Update: These numbers will change a little as remaining votes are counted, but the  message is that vote-by-mail people liked Kellar and Ender, whereas day-of-voters really liked Kellar and Boydston.

Update:  TCMS  10:37 pm  Don’t listen to Ken Pulskamp.  The provisionals will not move this race.  (Not enough ballots with this kind of lead.)  TimBen has not only beaten Laurie Ender but he has gang stomped her!! Laurie should concede.

 

Update:  TCMS  10:27 pm  Six precincts left.  Congratulations to TimBen Boydston on making history, third time.  SCVTalk is calling it for Boydston!!!

 

Update:  TCMS 10:20 pm  Numbers on City screen are not what Ken Pulskamp read.  It looks like TimBen will unseat the incumbent.  Even though 743 provisional ballots will not be counted tonight if this nearly 400 vote differential holds through the remainder of the polls those ballots cannot move the result.

 

Update:  TCMS  9:49 pm  ALL the absentees are counted (10,743-SCVTalk nailed it.)  Laurie Ender only has a 202 vote lead.  In 2010 Frank Ferry had an approximate 800 vote lead at this point which David Gauny darn near overcame.  TimBen’s chances of making history (third time) have now jumped to about 70%.  If he takes the lead when the first poll votes come in they can start the celebration, if they haven’t already.

Update:  TCMS  9:40 pm  Laurie Ender just took a jump, but with just six precincts to count for vote by mails she has a less than 50% chance of protecting from a TimBen surge in the poll votes.  If her lead is less than 600 votes going into the poll votes TimBen’s chances of winning surge to 60 to 65%.

 

Update:  TCMS  9:26 pm  Second update.  With about one half the votes counted Laurie Ender is in definite danger of losing her seat, and becoming only the third incumbent in City history to lose.  I would put TimBen’s chances at better than 50%.  Bob Kellar will easily finish first, with Colley and Hatami fourth and fifth.  I only will comment further on Ender and Boydston.

Update:  TCMS  9:10 pm   First update.  Percentages hold about constant but TBB picks up just a bit on Laurie Ender.  I can say with confidence that Colley and Hatami are heading for fourth and fifth, so no further updates on those two.

Update:  TCMS 9:03 pm  Five out of 31 absentee precincts reported.  Bob Kellar indicates a strong lead and probable first place finish, but too soon to tell.  Spread between Laurie Ender and TimBen Boydston about what expected but also too soon to see a trend.  Fourth and fifth place finish for Colley and Hatami at this point pretty much assured; perhaps a dogfight for fourth place.

Update: TCMS 8:02 pm-City personnel have started running the absentee ballots through the machines.  Not many “civilians” down here at City Hall.  Only person I recognize who is not being paid to be here is Chris Fall, former Waste Management executi

    Disappointed in the production of the TV/webcast tonight. Is it really out of the budget to include a tally light (so they know which camera to look at) and maybe a third or fourth lavalier microphone, so they don’t need to keep “breaking” to swap microphones between guests? I know, they’re all of $15/day to rent…..

    I am a bit surprised with Colley’s percentage. The only thing I can figure is he has some name recognition since he is on CLWA Board and his wife is on the Newhall Water Board whereas Jon Hatami has had no local involvement whatsoever.

    Question that went unanswered on the telecast… what happens if nobody gets over 50% of ballots cast? Runoff??? I’m assuming not because they said they get sworn in next week (which seems arbitrary, if you ask me). Can anyone verify, its only top two vote-getters, not those receiving majority of ballots cast?

    Winning by a majority is rare in Santa Clarita–only five times has a candidate received votes on 50%+ of ballots cast.

    This is starting to get embarrassing for Hatami. Colley did NOTHING that I saw in terms of campaigning, and is showing far better than Hatami.

    It’s looking really good for TimBen. I’ve stayed up way too late in my hotel room in Visalia (6:00 am meeting tomorrow) waiting for the results. If, when I get up in the morning , I find his victory is a sure thing I will be performing sommersaults all the way home. If that happens could someone drive me back to recover my vehicle?

    Shocked really. No one thought Ender would finish second, let alone third. Her organization and north valencia support was too strong. Did some enterprising and unsung community organizer get Jakes Way voters to mail in their ballots? Did TimBen have some secret sauce? How in the world did he spend about $1.80 per vote and Laurie Ender spent about $5.40 per vote and he’s finishing ahead of her? Did we underestimate the anger over the library issue, or perhaps, was the anger over the library issue ignored? Did any local union organizers play a role in this? Or were conservative tea party types stronger than we thought? Ender apparently made a lot of enemies over the last four years; this is like a WhoDunIt case and everyone is suspect. Crazy, shocking, unbelievable night. This is one for the books.

    I predicted a Kellar victory. I predicted a shocking upset by Boydston. I predicted a third place finish for Ender.     TBB had a crazy quilt of support from both Tea Partiers and the Occupyscv crowd. TimBen and his supporters worked very hard for every single vote. One really has to wonder whether this is the first visible crack in the McKeon political empire. Let us acknowledge the time and effort Laurie Ender has made to better our community…..Petz wishes her the best in future.

    Thanks. I was asking because right now, it seems like this election should be interpreted as a major shortfall for Ender rather than a huge surge for Boydston/Kellar, but it’s hard to say without knowing the number of ballots. If we estimate there were about 14.5K ballots (i.e., 90% of people vote for 2 candidates, and not including the uncounted ballots), then this is, roughly, the share of votes they actually received versus the null predictions I made a couple days ago: Kellar: 49% (48% predicted on avg. for someone in his position) Boydston: 39% (41% predicted on avg. for someone in his position) Colley: 29% (24% predicted on avg. for someone in his position) Hatami: 26% (24% predicted on avg. for someone in his position) So none of those were that far off. But the average person in Ender’s position “should have” gotten 54% of the vote +/- 9%; right now it’s looking like she was voted for on about 35% of ballots. Everyone did about as well as the average candidate in their position should be expected to do, except her.

    @Jeff – You may have thought that her organizational support was still strong but it had dwindled greatly. No one talked about it outloud but many of her PTA supporters were disenchanted by her and all that has come about during her 4 year tenure. I have a little quote that I think is fitting for tonight. “The glory of great men/women should always be measured by the means they have used to acquire it.” -Francois de La Rochefoucauld Congratulations to Bob Kellar and TimBen Boydston – a well deserved victory for both.

    iHeart – you need to look at absentees & election day separately. TimBen came on strong at the end. Laurie didn’t do well enough in the absentees to cancel out TimBen’s election-day surge.

    Those are absentees and election day combined, which is what the null model was predicting for. I was saying that everyone performed “as expected” except her–suggesting lack of enthusiasm for Ender more than redirected enthusiasm elsewhere.

    Timben fixed his mistake from 2010 which was sit and wait on election day. When I came into town today I saw at least 4-5 different signs about TBB and many had people holding them with reminders to vote.

    Seriously, hats off to the entire SCVT team – Jeff, Mike, IHeart and Tim for all of the live coverage, predictions and analysis. There are so many things that I google about our city and scvtalk always returns in the results. This site is a wealth of information and opinion on our valley and your election coverage tops everyone else. I never had so much fun watching city election results by myself.

    Well I must congratulate TimBen. I called the large margin by Kellar, but thought Ender would pull through past TimBen. Colley was much stronger than any of us thought. In addition to Laurie, the real political loser tonight is the McKeons. The Congressman supported and gave $1,000 to Hatami because he was mad at Kellar for supporting Wilk. Not only does Kellar have what may be the largest margins in election history, but Hatami came in dead last, and with the other old McKeon supporter Colley, took votes away from his other endorsed candidate, Laurie, helping to lead to her defeat. The guestion is what does this now mean for the Assembly race. Bob Kellar is now enboldened to follow through on his support for Wilk and do everything he can for him. TimBen has also endorsed Wilk and may bring his broad coalition to help him as well. I would not like to be Bob Haueter explaining to the Congressman tomorrow how this happened and what it may mean for Patricia McKeon

    I wanted to be at the Myers household last night to watch Tim’s head explode! Imagine, a challenger unseating an incumbent. What will happent in the numerology world?

    I’ll leave the slicing and dicing of the numbers to Tim, and analysis of campaign strategy to others, but I think what doomed Ender are the following: 1) The PAC support from the last election. When people realized that one individual spent nearly $30,000 on mailers on her behalf, even if Laurie knew nothing about it, there is a perception by individual voters that their voice is being marginalized. 2) Even for many that are pleased with the City run libraries, the PROCESS left a lot to be desired and Ender by her own account was a leader, if not THE leader, of this endeavor. 3) It is obvious that the new library being built is in large part a result of the City’s commitment to redevelop Newhall….a vision that many of Ender’s North Valencia base likely meet with indifference at best. 4) Links to Ferry, real or perceived, is probably a net loss of some votes; and 5) The “Jakes Way” comment so close to election day could not have helped matters.

    Eric I agree with your assessment but I would give more weight to the anger folks have towards Frank Ferry and the perception that Laurie simply did G&L and Frank’s bidding. I think Frank’s passing Bob over for Mayor Pro Tem was the straw that broke the camel’s back even before Jake’s Way comments and folks wanted to send a strong message that they want a different attitude from those elected to serve the people. I am also very curious to see the breakdown on ballots cast etc and what if any effect the unions had on this election. I will say it does not seem as though Laurie had her heart in this election either as she did too little too late. TimBen wisely backed Kellar and reaped many of Bob’s supporters as a result. TBB’s supporters deserve a lot of credit since they worked hard to get their candidate elected. If I were amongst the other incumbents I would heed the message that folks want a change in attitude from the dais, and be very careful of your council alignments, perceived or real, as you inherit their supporters but also their detractors. Laurene and Marsha one of you needs to nominate Bob Kellar for Pro Tem, which is what you should have done December 2011, or you leave that honor to TBB. There is a mandate from the people, it is called a winning vote. The people have spoken. Congratulations to Bob and TimBen. Thank you to Laurie Ender for “time served”.

    Ender Upended A great day for Santa Clarita. I will say this election brought out some of RemStar’s greatest hits, like this one : What this election is lacking is a candidate who is undereducated and whose past is marked by a string of business failures. It’s such a shame someone like that didn’t have the sack to take on Laurie Ender directly, because it would have been fun to watch them get their ass kicked by a girl. And this : WOW! TBB saved the “game changing” blockbuster endorsements for last!! The demonstration of grassroots volunteer support this weekend for Mayor Laurie Ender, plus the effective mailers Mayor Laurie Ender has been sending to targeted voters, must concern TBB’s followers. Mayor Laurie Ender has shown a stronger ground game (volunteers) and air superiority (mailers). But my favorite are refrains about the perceived irrelevance of SCVTalk: There are NO undecided voters on SCVtalk (we all have steong opinions) so candidates like Hatami and TBB waste their time by coming here to argue with people. On the other hand, if you oppose TBB like I do then it makes you happy to see him, Farley, Lucas, Wilkerson, Ferdman, et al, posting comments on SCVtalk because then you know they aren’t out gathering votes for their candidate. RemStar, you underestimate this blog. You judge it based on the comments, because that’s all you see. You have no clue how many thousands of readers it has, and how it most likely swayed this election.

    The “no undecided” couldn’t have been more wrong. I’m permanent absentee… but I marched my ass down to the school and voted provisionally (pink envelope and all) because it was a last minute decision for me. As a government employee, union member, blue-blooded liberal, one would have assumed I’d apparently be voting Hatami. As one who thinks the establishment should have been tossed, I was pretty much ready to bullet vote for him. But his obvious inability to comprehend the issues, and control his people (colossal blowup on SCVTalk, anyone?) showed me there was no way I could vote for him.

    I’m just outside of city limits, so I couldn’t vote. But if I could, I would have been undecided until I got my ballot. It would have been some combination of Boydston, Ender and Kellar. Maybe one, maybe two. I think all three are competent enough for the job (some more than others, but still), but I had at least one serious bone of contention with each. I made a decision early on in this race, in part due to my lack of intense like or dislike for any serious candidate, but mostly because I wanted to write about this campaign without a vested interest for any candidate. This is rare for me, so it felt strange. As a sometimes writer and full-time political junkie, this is about as exciting a result as I could have imagined. As a resident who is sometimes politically involved, I’m cautiously amused by it. As a Democrat resigned to knowing that most local elections will be a matter of voting for the Republican I can stomach, I’m usually motivated by not wanting to see the Republican I can’t stomach lose (and lose badly). If Ed Colley mounted a serious campaign, I may have found that motivation.

    I noticed yesterday that Boydston had a campaign sign directly across the street from Foster Elem. Polling place entrance.

    I think its brilliant strategy. The law says no electioneering within100feet from a polling place. So he posts them at the 101′st feet. Were it me? I’d have had a tape measure and one of those trucks with the giant signs parked in the street at the 101st foot mark (or as close as legally available).
