October 30, 2013 – Daily Brief

  • A cyclist, described as young man on a kids bike, was killed this morning on Railroad & Magic Mountain after apparently riding against a red light and on the wrong side of the street. He was struck by a LA County Sanitation vehicle. Deputies and coroners are investigating. SIGNAL, KHTS
  • More on the Chloride decision: Jim Holt has been covering our chloride pollution problem for years, so he quickly figured out what was behind the last minute change in support from Alternative 4 to Alternative 2. And it still doesn't quite make sense. Downstream farmers, organized in part by the United Water Conservation District, huddled together recently at a meeting in Santa Paula and quietly picked #2 instead of 4. What's more, a UWCD person says Santa Clarita today is no closer to decreasing chloride to acceptable levels than it was 10 years ago, even after removing our salt water softeners. SIGNAL
  • Is the chloride dispute over? Can we finally start arguing with each other about development again? Perry Smith at KHTS investigates and no, it doesn't sound like it's over at all. KHTS
  • County approves plan to expand Castaic library by 5,247 sq. ft. while adding 49 more parking spaces at its Sloan Canyon site. That follows another recent decision to build a library for Stevenson Ranch & west side residents on the Old Road. SIGNAL
  • Wilk, emerging power broker: As the House of McKeon declines into irrelevance and even incoherence, House Wilk rises. Assemblyman Wilk pens a great, insightful and sharp piece on how Buck McKeon seems to be putting Tony Strickland up as his successor. The move, Wilk says, is bad for the party and the Country. Lots of chatter about this piece today. FLASH REPORT, SANTA CLARITA.COM
  • Lady Ducayne reviews the scrumptious awesome confections available at Bake You Happy, perhaps the most storied baker company in the SCV, with appearances and wins on those food channel contests. LADY DUCAYNE
